Has the phrase "home school" become a generic term for ...? ... any form of education that has "home" as the primary location? For example: the word "google" has become more or less a generic word used to mean Internet search. "Google it!" I have seen the following refer to themselves as homeschoolers: The homebound (forced to be at home rather than physically present in the public school building ) Online public & private schoolers Has the term homeschool / homeschooling become a generic term for any type of education that takes place primarily from a person's home?
Is use of the generic word "he" when referring to an unknown or hypothetical person sexist? Is it sexist to use the generic term "he" in writing, such as in phrases like "every worker has his own desk"? The singular "they" sounds okay in casual speech, but when you write like that, it looks like you're in sixth grade. Even though everyone knows what the generic male pronoun really means, it could still appear kind of sexist. And I know an alternative is to use "he or she" but that starts looking weird if you say it more than once in a paragraph. What do you think?

My competitors steal all of my ads, ideas and catch phrases!? Everytime I come up with something new for my small business and start to promote with it I'll see my competitors using the same ideas a couple of months later. How can I let my clients know I was the one who originated all of the great ads, layouts and catch phrases? Also, how can I stop my competition from stealing from me? I already made my website generic (which I really didn't want to) and I try to pre-qualify my clients, but for some reason the competition still ends up using my work. I don't have anyone working with me so it's not someone within my work environment.
non-corny/lame wedding card phrases?? My boyfriend and I are attending the wedding of one of his friends (they're not too close; I've never met him, but my boyfriend has only good things to say about him). We found a gorgeous blank card; what should we write in it? I've found a tonne of quotes online...they're all too generic, too religious (we're not really sure of their beliefs, and we're both atheists) or too "sentimental". Do you know of any great song lyrics, quotes from a "counter-culture" figure, etc. that would work well in a wedding card? Please, please help! I'm an English major so this should be easy for me...it *would* be easier if I actually knew the couple. My boyfriend has asked me to do the card "because you're a better writer." Looking for intelligent help, please! No links to massive online databases please; I've already tried that! Thanks!
How can you tell if "natural flavor" includes honey.? I've been trying to get foods without honey in them but cant tell if the generic phrase "natural flavors" includes honey or not. Any ideas?
basketball speeches? Hi- I have a basketball banquet for my JV basketball team and I need to say some words about each player. I need some generic phrase/sentences/lines! HELP
Thoughts on free will? God gave humans free will... I'm wondering, what does it mean for a living thing to have free will? Is it specific to humans, or do all living things have free will?... like.. my dog? Can animals have free will? Could we tell the difference between an animal with free will, and one without? When people talk about free will, do they ever think about it "technically", or is it just kind of a generic catch phrase that's convenient for theology and Sunday morning? What are your thoughts on free will? If you don't think free will exists, please elaborate! Trying to jump-start *thought among Christians is like... trying to pass a camel through the eye of a needle.
We a society of DEPTH? Would you consider this a culture of DEPTH? Now I know depth can be considered many things to many people, but I'm just asking in general terms here. Is the saying "living life to its fullest" an actually deep statment or just a generic-catch-phrase thats been adopted by this "Gilrs Gone Wild" instant gradification environment we currently live in? So would do think, are we a culture/soceity of DEPTH?
Happy Holidays? Since we arent really supposed to say Merry Christmas so some people wont get offended. Wouldnt saying "Happy Holidays" offend Manic Depressives? What would be a better phrase "okay generic government recognized break from work and school" woudl that work better not to offend?
What is another phrase for "I was wondering if..."? That phrase is way too generic and I hate it...
Why do people genderize relationship issues? If someone, male or female, act or react a certain way in a relationship, and someone feels like commenting on that behavior, their analysis is often followed by a generic statement that begins with phrases such as -- "Women tend to ..." "Men always ..." Can we get past these catch-phrases? Are books such as Dr. John Gray's "Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus" evidence that society still wants to believe in gender conventions? Great comments guys (except Mike T's, which is seriously lacking anything resembling a thought process!). I agree that it's a cop-out. Sometimes it's even funny, how simplistic the reasoning is. I'd like to see South Park or someone do a spoof on it. Mike - Although, you could also characterize my response as an aggressive, personal attack.
Skin color matters? Sorry, I just read an extremely racist question and I was going to post these words but before I got done, the question was deleted, and I thought I would just put that here. Also what do you think about racism? Are you racist, if you are, go ahead and tell your side. It won't hurt my feelings if you hate white people. But read this and tell me if im wrong. I would just like to say that "White people" is a very generic, broad topic and phrase. They call that stereotyping. They call it that because not everyone that is apart of the "White people" group acts the same way. I could be chinese, Mexican, or British but it wouldnt make a difference. How I was raised is how I act. I'm sorry for some dumbass hicks who act the way they do. Just because they were raised to hate African Americans doesn't mean shit. You were obviously raised to hate white people. I'm sorry dude, but you are just as much the problem as those dumb hicks. People like me just want to get along but you don't see that, you can't see past my white skin. What right do I have thinking that just because you're human being that I can trust you? I guess I have none. I don't know what it's like to be the target. Absolutely I do not. Nor do I make racism a problem. Racism isn't just a fancy word. And that word wasn't just created by white people for leverage. It simply means and form of discrimination of alienation because of race. Traits we all notice that come with race is the color of your skin, and many other things (like the size and shape of your nose for example). The reason it's not a problem in most other countries is because America is the most diverse nation in the world!!!! Aperantly, most americans dont like that. They want America to themselves and people just like them. IF you go anywhere in Europe, there are people of race, shape, color, and all that good stuff. But, those countries have been around for 100s of years. America is fresh, new. We need to learn to deal with our diversity.
what are these earrings called? http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j4/cnrward/Style%20and%20Clothing%20pics/Street%20Style/082420071333258589.jpg you can't see it well, but theyre usually worn by like "street gangsta style" y'know? they're usually gold (colour) and hoops (large) with like, jagged edges? pointy all round? i wanted to get them online and need a key phrase to type in. the generic ones didn't work. thnx [=
I'm trying to write thank you notes for family in Spanish. My spanish sucks. Help? I went to south america and visited long lost family. Had a great time and now I want to send back some thank you cards. I don't want to sound generic with just 'Gracias'...trying to find translation for phrases like "Thank you for your hospitality" "I had a great time, I appreciated your courtesy"...etc. I can say this stuff, but my written spanish blows. I always end up translating something the wrong way or not getting my grammar quite right. Any help from native spanish speakers (or those who have a way with Spanish) would be much appreciated.
What does the phrase "You don't work to live, but live to work" mean to you? the "you" is generic. like the general public or something. How would you interpret this phrase?
My beloved math teacher will be retiring this year. I had him last year and am given a special opportunity.? I get to interview him for the school newspaper along with several other retiring teachers. My BIGGEST question is what interview questions should I ask? With the ENTIRE school receiving a copy of this special edition newspaper, I don't want to ask questions that are too personal; yet, I don't want to ask those generic (nobody will care to read) questions either. What questions can I ask to make this special for both my teacher and my fellow students. I'm currently in high school and the high school students are my readers. I need answers asap. Thanks. My newspaper manager also told me to ask questions that don't evoke one word responses so basically she means stick with something interesting that students would want to know about the teacher. The teacher has been around for over 20 years and has seen some students grow up. He loves moose and is about 70 years old. He teaches math (algebra II). He loves using the phrases "scum bucket" "slime bag" and "scum bag" for fun of course.
Help with better keywords for internet search engines? My company has a website hosted by another company and in the program we use to make the webpage we type in the keywords and phrases. But when I search for us in yahoo or google, we never come up. We have tried super specific words, generic words, a couple words, tons of words and nothing seems to help. Does anyone have any ideas on how to improve our chances of being found by an internet search engine? We are very small and struggling as it is so we can't afford to spend a bunch of money on internet ads. Thanks!
What keywords would you use to find a web designer? There are so, so many web designers out there that a generic search for "web designer" gives a million results. Would you use a different phrase, like "i need a website built" or would you maybe narrow down the results by adding more keywords, like "web designer miami"? Also, do you care whether or not your web designer works in your area or are you content with long distance?
How Much Do You Know About HMO's? INFORMATION YOU NEED TO HELP YOU CHOOSE YOUR NEXT HEALTH PLAN .. Q. What does HMO stand for? A. This is actually a variation of the phrase, "HEY MOE." Its roots go back to a concept pioneered by Moe of the Three Stooges, who discovered that a patient could be made to forget about the pain in his foot if he was poked hard enough in the eyes. Q. I just joined an HMO. How difficult will it be to choose the doctor I want? A. Just slightly more difficult than choosing your parents. Your insurer will provide you with a book listing all the doctors in the plan. These doctors basically fall into two categories -- those who are no longer accepting new patients, and those who will see you but are no longer participating in the plan. But don't worry; the remaining doctor who is still in the plan and accepting new patients has an office just a half-day's drive away and has a diploma from a Third World Country. Q. Do all diagnostic procedures require pre-certification? A. No. Only those you need. Q. Can I get coverage for my preexisting conditions? A Certainly, as long as they don't require any treatment. Q. What happens if I want to try alternative forms of medicine? A. You'll need to find alternative forms of payment. Q. My pharmacy plan only covers generic drugs, but I need the name brand. I tried the Generic Medication, but it gave me a stomachache. What should I do? A. Poke yourself in the eye. Q. What if I'm away from home and I get sick? A. You really shouldn't do that. Q. I think I need to see a specialist, but my doctor insists he can handle my problem. Can a general practitioner really perform a heart transplant right in his office? A. Hard to say, but considering that all you're risking is the $15 co-payment, there's no harm in giving him a shot at it.
i can't seem to recall the word which means.....? i need one word, or a phrase, meaning "as the name suggests"... Example of usage: The XYZ Region, <as the name suggests>, is in XYZ. pls don't suggest "obviously", and other such generic words.. Phrases from Latin, Greek, French, and other foreign languages, that are sometimes used in English are welcome.
what are RAD technologies please? (And have I used them?)? 'Microsoft RAD technologies such as MS Access' This phrase appeared in a job advert. I have done a bit in Access - but I don't understand the reference to RAD which I presume means Rapid Application Development. Is RAD something I would have to learn separately (like another language/application) or a piece of generic jargon?
How do I write a professional letter for my company? I have to write an extremely generic letter to all of my companies clients saying basically that the company is doing great, and that we have many exciting current and upcoming projects. My brain is fried right now and for some reason I can't even begin to think of how I would phrase this. Can someone please help me. Thanks
LIVING LIFE TO THE FULLEST: What Does that mean? I kind of hate phrase! Most of the people who I hear say that. Well, to be honest. . . there talking about nothing but sex. Really. . . that's we have going? Pfffff! come on. I would like to beileve this life a lot more to offer then meaning flings and one stands. Are we that empty? Is that really life at its fullest? No matter what, people are always gonna have regrets about something. You can say you won't but that's a lie. How can you not?! Every choice you made your gonan be proud of?Especailly in todays' society. We live in such a shallow, over implusive age. Are we really living life to its fullest? Or just stealing from it and taking as much we can. Not really knowing anything about this life we've been given? I personally hate that statement. It's just so generic to me. I understand what they're trying to say. . . But I can't stand it. Overrated statement to me. Thoughts?
What do you think about a "paid" search engine? Search engines sometimes tend to favor results that might not be the most relevant to the phrase and/or question asked. How about a search engine that would rate the results based on the relevance and the freshness of the data. This would minimize the amount of content that may be a listing, too generic, or in some cases not contain the relevant data. BTW, by "paid", I did not necessarily mean that the end user (surfer) has to pay!
is the TOS facism? who are they to judge what is a real question, pll phrase questions differently ,especially if english isnt first language, or if you had an insulting tone, well truth be told some one will always be insulted. so my question is why have yahoo answer if they are going to judge a person with out contacting them to see what they meant? and if the do contact its the same generic rhetoric. is yahoo to easy to bow down to those with the itch to report? do people report just over difference of opinion ? sorry if i didnt ask a question properly , i didnt know there was a templet, sarcasm ps sorry for any spelling errors and such im dyslexic
Why is evolution such a threatening idea? I don't see why it changes anything, and it is a pretty elegant and straightforward explanation of a natural phenomenon. Yet some people feels like it threatens their very way of life and even find the word itself offensive. Such a thing doesn't make us into another generic ape, it just shows how amazing it is that we rose from the chaos to civilization. I don't see why people use the reasoning behind the phrase "because the bible said so" because the bible says alot of things and many of the them are disregarded by almost all people. I'm not declaring people abandon their beliefs, I just want to know why out of all ideas, evolution is regarded with such disdain.

Cussing. Is the phrase "God damnit " offensive to Christians.? In the bible God is a generic name for deity. Are you equally offended by the words "deity damnit"? Does anyone use the word "God" when they pray? Dont Christians use the name of Jesus or Lord? And isnt it the anger or pride that is the sin and people over react to the words?
Executives: What if I avoided all of the "typical" phrasing and really? did something different with my resume. Proclaiming my charasmatic ways, intelligence and education listed in a "personable way" rather than with a generic tone. Would you be intrigues above and beyond that of your aerage resume??
