Generic Phrases

i can't seem to recall the word which means.....?

i need one word, or a phrase, meaning "as the name suggests"... Example of usage: The XYZ Region, <as the name suggests>, is in XYZ. pls don't suggest "obviously", and other such generic words.. Phrases from Latin, Greek, French, and other foreign languages, that are sometimes used in English are welcome.

Public Comments

  1. The XYZ region is one in the same as it is in XYZ. Self explanatory Self evident
  2. The closest thing I can find is: nomen est omen: "the name is a sign." Thus, "true to its name". I've been searching through Wikipedia's lists of Latin and French phrases used in English, but that was all I could find that might work. I can't recall any single English word with that meaning. "As the name suggests" doesn't sound bad, or "as one might suppose," or "true to its name."
  3. The expression I use is "hence the name", with a little rewording of the sentence = "The XYZ Region is in XYZ, hence the name".
  4. I wonder if the word you're looking for is eponymous. It doesn't exactly mean "as the name suggests" but describes a person whose name is given to a place or thing eg: Emma Knightly, the eponymous heroine of Jane Austen's novel.
